"Renowned social psychologist and creator of the "Stanford Prison Experiment," Philip Zimbardo explores the mechanisms that make good people do bad things, how moral people can be seduced into acting immorally, and what this says about the line separating good from evil.

The Lucifer Effect explains how—and the myriad reasons why—we are all susceptible to the lure of “the dark side.” Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can work in concert to make monsters out of decent men and women.

Here, for the first time and in detail, Zimbardo tells the full story of the Stanford Prison Experiment, the landmark study in which a group of college-student volunteers was randomly divided into “guards” and “inmates” and then placed in a mock prison environment. Within a week, the study was abandoned, as ordinary college students were transformed into either brutal, sadistic guards or emotionally broken prisoners.

By illuminating the psychological causes behind such disturbing metamorphoses, Zimbardo enables us to better understand a variety of harrowing phenomena, from corporate malfeasance to organized genocide to how once upstanding American soldiers came to abuse and torture Iraqi detainees in Abu Ghraib. He replaces the long-held notion of the “bad apple” with that of the “bad barrel”—the idea that the social setting and the system contaminate the individual, rather than the other way around. (less)

We might be designed to respond that way to make the catalyst harder to resist.

It would seem the idea behind the lure of darkness and its corrupting influence is to choose not to follow along with it.

It just made me think about our society and how with its focus on capitalist ideas and valuing the surface over the depth of a person we are basically trained enmass to follow this conditioning.

It amazing any of us escape it

Perhaps this falls in line with the gender fluidity thread concept that changing norms in behavior through evolution will unravel the control schemes around our society.  Sexuality is a powerful hold on the mind.  Especially with what's been built on those norms and the judgments against men and women that follow.

It seems to make sense then that old modes of thinking come undone as new generations evolve how humanity operates.

Yesterdays Farmer's children's children are today's Engineers, Tomorrow's engineer's children's children will be Space Explorers.

Those advancements require some changes in society lol

The farmer needs peace to grow crops lest they be burned.  The engineer needs a society of technology to tinker and that's not possible without agriculture.  The space farer needs the advanced technology to go exploring, that cant get there without the tinkering of engineers.

What will the darkness of tomorrow look like?  It used to be djinns and faeries, now its demons and men, tomorrow it might be aliens and monsters.

Life is pretty fascinating.

I think the barrel concept is very accurate, so what can we do to solve this problem?  How does one get one to be moral in an environment of immorality?
