Searched, but could not find a thread on this: "The Global Village Construction Set (GVCS) is a modular, DIY, low-cost, high-performance platform that allows for the easy fabrication of the 50 different Industrial Machines that it takes to build a small, sustainable civilization with modern comforts.

The aim of the GVCS is to lower the barriers to entry into farming, building, and manufacturing. Its a life-size lego set that can create entire economies, whether in rural Missouri, where the project was founded, or in the developing world."

I like this idea, as they are actually bothering to use their freedom to create practical stuff, rather than to occupy a park and complain like children.

    Thanks for posting this, Pickle.

Have you built any of the open source machines? I'm particularly interested in "The Liberator" - the brick press. Of course, although his speech makes the building of these machines sound incredibly simple, they are not at all simple to just go out and build. A great deal of prep work, work areas, and assembly tools are required.

He compares an old Farmall 656 tractor to his open source trackhoe - which is a bit of an apples to zinnias comparison (in my opinion). When we were living on our land, we were able to purchase a CAT combination rubber tired backhoe (which has the dozer bucket on one end and the claw on the other) a Hesston farm tractor with several farming attachments, International dump truck, and a trailer for less than $20,000 total. And we didn't have to build anything or pay to have it repaired (since my husband is able to do that type of work himself and already has many of the tools).

    Very interesting and helpful information!

Yeah, our search system isn't very effective. I usually google search a keyword using the following:

    site:www.bring4th.org/forums keyword

    eg
