I know that Ra says that TV puts people to sleep:

Quote:34.13 Questioner: What is the general overall effect of television on our society with respect to this catalyst?

Ra: I am Ra. Without ignoring the green-ray attempts of many to communicate via this medium such information, truth, and beauty as may be helpful, we must suggest that the sum effect of this gadget is that of distraction and sleep.

but what about movies? do you think they can be useful as a catalyst? to stimulate emotions, experience archetypes, to blend images and sound and voice into a perceptive artwork?

I must say, I haven't been the biggest cinephiile in my life, but I've watched my fair share of good and bad films. The good ones made a deep impression. (sunshine of the spotless mind, old boy, T2)

I don't watch much tv or even movies any more but movies are a great catalyst, at least they have been for me. I noticed when well into my journey when I watched a movie that movie would always have something pertaining to me at that current point in time.

I tend to watch stuff more for catalyst and further understanding now instead of being mindlessly distracted by whats on the screen. I would say that would be the key difference between distraction and sleep and successful integration of the message whatever you where watching was trying to tell you.

thanks for the movie reccomendations : )

I think how it really depends mostly on what the viewer makes of what they watch and not so much what they watch making something of them.

Keep in mind that Ra says "the sum effect of this gadget"...that means that it can have other effects of the individual, but when viewed as an influence on society as a whole, it tends to be more of a distraction.

I think that movies, television, music, and video games can all be used as both Ra and yourself suggest plenum...that is, "to stimulate emotions, experience archetypes, to blend images and sound and voice into a perceptive artwork." This effect is a lot greater when entering into the experience with the intent to learn and grow from it.

Also, sometimes, "distraction and sleep" isn't necessarily a bad thing though, as they can offer a sort of "pause button" on any intense catalyst we're dealing with. But when someone fills their life with TV shows and movies in order to avoid catalyst at all cost, I can see how it prevents any real growth.

Did not touch Torchlight 2 yet, but honestly, I do not intend to at this point : )
The game is amazing (Diablo 3). Put all this work into a Wizard that I can play inferno on (act1 currently), and I just made a monk "alt".

What was very odd for me is to experience something so good and beautiful with all its flaws (online server issues at launch hour and later on, disconnects, etc), without even being mildly angry or mad. I just stared the screen silently, half-smiling. I see all the rage on the internet, and it does not even touch me. I can understand how people with the "normal" mentality would go mad over some of the issues, though - but those issues are not mine to deal with BigSmile

Tropico 4 is good catalyst for un-awakened ones IMHO. I owe partial credit to it's creators for helping me wake up.

Here is a gallery of most of the references I could find. There were more, however. Wink

It was good especially when viewed in the whole sto/sts reference. The story is basically the dictator stranded in America and loses all of his wealth, he meets an american girl new ager hippy who he falls in love with. There was a scene where the girl goes in to a big speech that hypnotizes the dictator and directly behind her was a blue light shining on her.

Sacha Baren Cohen uses satire to portray the sto/sts extremes and how love wins over fear.

It all depends on what level of consciousness the observer is on. Although it is known that television has a dozing effect on your overall brain performance(wave patterns), the effect of how the story is portrayed is decided by the watcher.

I can imagine people to build maps and templates after movies they've seen, even if its not like reality at all. I for one, have never even been close to an american high school, yet countless of movies have formed an idea in my mind. I think many people will take after the values of the characters with whom they've created illusory emotional bonds with. Some aren't awake at all, and will just follow the herd whatever the cause.

If you were to watch a kids show with Spiderman saying "Drugs are bad mkay?" You probably would know that it's not so black and white in reality today, yet as a kid you'd totally agree with your hero.

Just stay awake and I'm sure it's great catalyst Smile

The last one recall is Requiem for a Dream. It put me in such a funk when I was done. I felt way better after meditating on it. I feel it served the purpose of re-kindling a source of great philosophical suffering. The movie was a gift and purgative catalyst.

Ugh, Requiem for a Dream is one of the most painful movies I've ever watched. It has left a permanent mark on my psyche. That being said, it was one of those movies that was awesome to watch the first time then NEVER watch again.

I dont watch a lot of TV/movies anymore, though I enjoy trying to draw the message from them when I do.

I watched 'The Matrix' the night before one of my early teen birthdays, and I remember thinking it over, perhaps this 'reality' isnt what it seems. I actually watched it again last night, and was quite surprised at how much I was thinking about LOO throughout it. Instead of seeing Neo realise he is The One, he is realising he IS One. I guess the film was quite the catalyst for me.

"The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work... when you go to church... when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth." - sound like the veil anyone?

"Neo, sooner or later you're going to realize just as I did that there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path." - this one really speaks to me as I have read the Ra material but I need to be living it!
