    It always bugged me that bits of 'dirt' came out with the ice when I worked at fast food restaurants.

    Hah! mold was growing in my ice machine at Starbucks and it gets cleaned about once every 2 months. Moral of the story: if you wish to ensure the quality of the food you eat, make it yourself.

    Oh and county health codes are extremely relaxed about these things. At Starbucks we have an independent company audit our practices just so we have higher standards, but most food joints are allowed to be pretty nasty.
