Religion has been around for thousands of years. A common belief is that man created religion as he began to question the world around. The first religions were based on what people noticed most, such as the sun and the moon, and the animals that they interacted with.
There is enough evidence to suggest that many religions share common themes, such as the story of a flood that destroyed the world, and the virgin birth.

Later religions began to deal with human behavior, and more fundamental and spiritual issues dealing with the origin of creation, and man's place within it.

Monotheism came as an idea that suggested that there is only one creator of the universe. This idea took hold, and today it remains the most accepted religious principle.

What do you think is the purpose of religion?
Is it possible that religion is not completely the product of human imagination?

Extradimensional information filters through the imagination, religion is therefore a product of the distortion of human perception of extradimensional perception of the Law of One.

Ra is one of many entities that have attempted to teach the ways of the multiverse to humans. All religious texts are the result of some sort of channeling.

Some religion were started out of good intentions, some were started out of bad intentions, but almost all of them turned into control systems for STS people. The ideal purpose of a religion would be providing people with as true beliefs as possible, or beliefs that can help them polarize the most to STO, or beliefs that can help them understand the world around them the most. In my opinion the purpose of religion now is basically a comfort for many people who aren't ready yet to abandon their assumptions and seek truth in a more direct way, which is useful for these people, but I still would prefer that the arbitrary system of beliefs they take comfort in be as true as possible, as STO oriented as possible, and not a means for an elite to gain power and money.

The Religions, as the institutions they've become, were formed around the message given.

The person or group that initially offered the message and gave teachings did so in humble service, with the intention of giving truth and a code of conduct conducive to increasing the spirituality of man. Also, this would include instruction on practical matters -- it's often forgotten that these practical instructions, such as not eating shellfish, are dependent on the circumstances. Today the cleanliness of pigs in not such a huge consideration in eating them, 5000 years ago this was not the case.

This usually gets distortded into a rigid moral code.

After some time, the person is deified, the combination of the two result in a consideration that the institution (along with the specific moral code) is divinely ordained, when that's not necessarily the case.
