It takes application of will power in order to accept and love, or control (for STS), aspects of the self or other self. That will power is channeled through something and transformed into something else which results in polarization. What are those somethings and how do they effect the energy centres?
You can think of "polarization" as your "level of resistance" to unity.
At opposite ends of the spectrum you have unity and separation. The less polarized you are, the more separated you are. (however, paradoxically, absolute polarization and absolutely no polarization are the same). Low polarity constitutes a resistance to unity. The intelligent energy that is your consciousness is being resisted from expanding to higher and more harmonious shells of energy expression.
You could also think of "separation" as "disharmony". Anger arises from separation, or disharmony. The consciousness of anger affects the consciousness of your body. The body begins to resonate with this disharmony, causing manifestations that reflect that disharmony. Cancer is simply one example of that kind of reflection/manifestation.
The energy centers are simply vortices of conscious expression of whatever consciousness level they are representative of. They have the "locations" that they do based on the nature of the body we presently inhabit. A fish or insect's energy centers would be in different locations than ours would be, for example.
They express at those physical locations that resonate most closely with the consciousness of the energy center. In reality, they are non-local. They only have "physical locations" in their interaction with the physical body which has tangible spatial dimensions.
The non-physical energy body is a intangible pathway of consciousness that reaches from the lowest level of consciousness to the highest level of consciousness. Anything "seen" is just a tangible translation of this non-local consciousness stream.
