So in my attempt to get my head around the Great Pyramid, it seems even more mysterious now than when I began

yeah, the original (supplied by Ra) was of granite, and later they used one made of gold.

and I agree - the Great Pyramid is one of the outstanding structures on this planet, a true marvel. And yet, the following is somewhat saddening to read:
