I would say that an interest in the 'pathways' leads to indigo development. Pathways are the 'currents' on which intelligent energy naturally rides; and so knowing the pathways allows a conscious redirecting/intensification of the chosen area. It also permits conscious balancing/conscious absorption in the other energy centers, as it becomes 'transparent' to the observer.
Most psychics/spiritualists have a random hole in their field which permits their activated behaviour.
