Personally, I can imagine few better ways become enslaved than to spend one's time worrying about being enslaved.

I can think of at least one: not spending one's time worrying about being enslaved, when someone - or something - else has its mind on that very subject.

Believing they have the ability to enslave you gives them that power, by definition. Deny the ability, and you deny them the power. After all, even enslavement must ultimately be consensual. Worrying that it might happen means you're already halfway there; all that would remain to be done is convincing you it had already happened.
