Circa 1969, JFK's assassination was a mere six years in the past; Malcolm X's, four; RFK, Jr.'s
and King's but one. Kent State was less than a year in the future. In 1968 had occurred mass
anti-Establishment demonstrations among European youth (the movement spreading into the U.S.)
of a magnitude not seen since 1848's revolutionary uprisings.
By mid-'69, about 42,000 U.S. combat deaths had occurred in the Southeast Asian theater
of operations. The previous year had seen what turned out to be the U.S.'s highest KIA total of
the conflict: 16,899.
During the three-day course of the festival's run 79 U.S. military personnel were killed in action in
the theater. (I don't have the comparable figures for South Vietnamese/Laotian/Cambodian/North Vietnamese
soldiers/civilians killed there, but I'm fairly confident the actual number is not a negligible one.)
Ironically, U.S. military aid was given to the festival when critical food/medical issues developed.
(Incidentally, two deaths occurred during the festival among its 400,000 attendees -- but two births evened the score.)
"I edited 200 silent color news film clips seamlessly together; none of which being longer than 22 seconds,
of the crowd from the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in Bethel NY in August of 1969, in a cohesive manner.
These crowd scenes were mostly shot by journalist on location. Not by the film crew there to make a film of
the concert its self; on high quality color tube cameras. Well documented and then archived. Even from the
music shoot cameras; most of the crowd scenes shots have become cutting room floor material."
