The birds had internal bleeding, but the last report I read said they didn't know whether the bleeding caused the deaths, or occurred after the birds were already dead and hit the ground.
When people don't have explanations, they tend to grasp at ideas, to attempt to explain it. That's the impression I got from the sunflower seeds.
But I do agree with your larger point, that the incidents have differing circumstances and there isn't really a clear commonality among all of them.
