Yup, most of what is momentous does not seem to be so while it is happening. But when you look back, we can sense the impact. Like for example, when the renaissance or the industrial revolution was happening in Europe, the 'lay' people living at the epicenter at that time would have felt nothing in terms of the importance of what was happening all around.
But after a few years or when the following generations arrive, they can see that the period completely transformed the world. What usually captures our interest now is mega-events like cataclysmic natural events of gigantic scale, spectacular geopolitical incidents, etc.
