Even G. I. Gurdjieff, one of the great spiritual teachers of the early 20th century, charged for his services (and once gave an outstanding lecture about how people don't want to pay for the one thing that is really important in life: enlightment.....it's recounted in the thoroughly excellent book In Search of the Miraculous, by P. D. Ouspensky; I highly recommend it).
Even spiritual teachers have to feed, house, and clothe themselves. They are not funded by the government....and I wouldn't trust one who was.
