I like how in Ultima IX, the Avatar finally figures out that the more he bought into the idea of being Brittania's personal savior in the previous episodes, the more he opened the door for the Guardian to enter through the Black Gate.
After finally tracking the Guardian down, the Avatar makes to do battle with his sword and shield, only to find that every time he strikes the Guardian, he damages himself! Because, ultimately, the Avatar and the Guardian are One!
The only way for the Avatar to save Britannia is to invoke the spell of Ascension, thus binding himself to the Guardian and removing both of them from the land. Finally, at long last, the Avatar realizes that it is time for the residents of Britannia to discern the path for themselves, rather than to follow a single charismatic leader.
Stellar reference. I am as excited in Azazel in Guardians from the Octave Above with respect to my Wrinkle in Time reference.
