You know how they used to call alcohol "spirits"? A glass that does not effect you is like eating fermented fruit, while using it for inebriation is more along the lines of letting your spirit leave while another watches house, so to speak. So, depending on your views of what is "us", what parts(subtle bodies) are important, and what your awareness is of other forms that can influence you, push you out, take over, etc, it can be important.
