I would only feed them bread occasionally, it has the potential to affect their digestion. I've also heard stories of it affecting egg production, but that doesn't make much sense.
You can feed them almost any sort of fresh veggie or fruit from the kitchen or garden except for potatoes and avocados...these can be dangerous for them. Onions will affect the flavor of eggs.
Generally, if they have plenty of food and room to forage, they'll stay away from stuff that is bad for them.

We have a rooster that starts going off around 4am...sometimes 3:30am...I'm sure he wouldn't make it in the city!
Can throw the manure in the garden, so that is a definite bonus!
