I had a similar thought. While you are working on balancing, maybe you could direct your hunger towards eating foods that will not cause you to gain weight -- carrot sticks, celery stalks, etc.
It would mean controlling the urge to some extent, but instead of repressing it you'd be working with it and pointing it in a new direction.
