I only recently started to meditate on a regular basis, yet already effects can be seen. It is a very good tool to step away from the old emotional states, thoughts patterns and worries you've accumulated throughout the day. You may not even be aware of them until you quiet your mind.
Consider all the programs and processes going on in the background on your computer. Not until you push Ctrl+Alt+Delete may you be aware of what is running. Meditation is like sorting out the weeds, keeping only the most beautiful and fruitful of plants in the garden of your mind.
So, meditation is really a given if you want a clean and healthy state of mind.
