Behold a brother walking the path I once blazed;
He looks to me ahead, only to see 'what was,' in moonlight hazed.
I feel his gaze upon my form take stock;
I turn & eyes meet, our souls embracing lock.
Mind-speak ensues – “I must your footsteps echo” my brother said.
“Not so, brother mine, but look to yet another path untred. ...
For to follow me now would leave yond' virgin grass too high;
Turf longing yet to kiss the feet of one of holy brow,” I sigh.
“This grief a heavy-heart makes in me, yet a token I would seek from thee;
to show our heart-union-rhythm-one, in syncopation, set free.”
So in gesture I reply, I grasp the stone, on silver cord around my neck does lie;
I tare if from its' millennial resting place upon my breast, to toss it in the sky.
It flies, as if on wings, to eclipse the rising sun, & in its shadow one can spy;
Runes of ancient sage to read: “What we see here, my brother, is all a lie.”
The one who follows & the one who leads, are not two, but one – my fellow.
For to follow, one must take the lead, & go where none may follow.
