Maybe capitalism is more than an economic system, maybe its a religion too. After all, people talk about "the economy" the way they talk about natural disasters or acts of god. Here are some points I came up with.

Capital is the god
Business sections are the scripture, The Financial Times and Wall Street Journal being the holiest
Stock tickers are the omens
Business reporters are the evangelists
Business schools are seminaries
Executives are priests, managers are deacons
CEOs and Chairs are the bishops
There is no one pope, power is shared by wealthy families such as the Rothschilds and Rockefellers
Work is church
Freedom is the donation
Bills are the rituals
Economists devine the economy's next miracles and disasters
There is only one commandment: Thou shalt maximize profit for yourself at all costs
Communism is a Protestant sect
Social democracy is a cloistered order frowned upon by the church
Resource based economies and anarchy are labelled cults
Politicians are the canonized saints
Some of the priests and saints advocate for minor changes
Some non-believers advocate for major changes, but they still have to go to church and practice the rituals
Capitalismism is the state religion, blasphemy is punishable by social exclusion and ridicule
Faithful followers may one day have the privelage of becoming a deacon or even a priest, a few will become saints, very few will become bishops unless from a well connected family
Profits fulfill ones yearning for salvation

What do you guys think?
