it also should be noted that under Ra's system of Tarot, card 8 is Balance and card 11 is the Enchantress.

you will notice that in modern decks these positions are reversed, and so 'obscure' the meaning intended. This is their supposed explanation for the reversal of positions:

Quote:In the Rider Waite Tarot (1909) these cards are reversed, ie. Card 8 is Strength and Card 11 is Justice. This was done by Waite to make them better fit with the astrological correspondences worked out by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.

it should be noted that when considering the tarot as archetypes, Ra consistently asked Don to overlook or omit the astrological symbols as they were later add-ons, and not part of Ra's original conception.

"92.26 Questioner: Are there any other parts of this picture that were not given by Ra?

Ra: I am Ra. The astrological symbols offered are not given by Ra."

and these are the cards in question:

CARDS 8 (BALANCE, JUSTICE) should be:

CARDS 11 (ENCHANTRESS, STRENGTH) should be:

this is something to keep in mind if you are just new to the tarot and are working with Ra's conception ... and wondering why your deck doesn't quite match up Smile

Actually, the original reason for their reversal--though Waite didn't speak openly about it--is the alignments of the cards upon the Tree of Life. It is generally accepted within the Golden Dawn tradition that the cards match the paths in order, but only if 8 and 11 are switched.

Edit: Crowley later switched 4 and 17, but this move makes little sense to me and leads me to be suspicious of Crowley's work.

Second Edit: The significance of the difference between changing the order due to astrological correspondences as opposed to Tree of Life pathway correspondences is one of primacy. In the Golden Dawn, the Tree of Life is given primacy over both the Tarot and astrology. Hence, correspondences are drawn between the three symbologies in an effort to synchronize the Tarot and astrological symbols with the already accepted meanings of the archetypes as understood through the Tree alone.
Hope this isn't too brutal of thread digging or off topic:

If I wanted to purchase a set of tarot cards, which deck should I purchase? I have found some the the B&W BOL decks (prefer the lack of colour actually) but I'm not sure if these are conducive to one studying the archetypes.

Anyone can recommend a deck for me, please? Or, what decks have you all used?

there's more information about the cards here:

but the Brotherhood of Light deck seems to be the way to go.

I've never owned that deck myself, but always used the tarot images online here:

Honestly I think it's mostly a matter of preference. I use a generic Universal Waite tarot deck and it serves me just fine. There's all kinds of nice decks out there though Smile

I like the Egyptian decks because they have the cards in the "right" order and they're similar to the cards Don was asking from, which were the then-current deck from the Church of Light.

If you want a deck, this one is probably closest to the images Don had: http://www.amazon.com/Egyptian-Tarot-Dec...0913866946

This is the Church of Light's current version: https://www.light.org/tarot-cards--broth...-P14C5.cfm

I have this set and like it: https://www.light.org/tarot-cards--ibis-...P124C5.cfm (Also available used on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Ibis-Tarot-Deck-Jo...0880795166 )

Another Egyptian tarot: http://www.amazon.com/The-Egyptian-Tarot...073870010X

I'm not sure, but this book may include images of the cards Don was asking from: https://www.light.org/course-06-the-sacr...-P13C5.cfm

As Plenum pointed out, images of the cards Don was asking from, with changes suggested by Ra to cards 1-7, can be found at http://www.lawofone.info/images/ .  They're also at http://www.thirddensity.com/tarot/
