the nature of 3rd density is one of extreme catalyst. Both in terms of its sheer quantity, but also of its intensity. If you live in 3d, you are subject to ongoing, abundant catalyst. Hence it behooves one to understand its mechanism more deeply.
in the archetypes, on the third 'rung' up the chain exist the three Catalyst cards. In the sequence, they are as follows:
chain of body: Balance, Wisdom, Wheel of Fortune
clarity of mind: Magician, High Priestess, Empress
light of the spirit: Devil, Tower, Star of Hope
now catalyst is inherently destablising to the self. It captures our attention, and asks for resolution. But if we are patient and attentive in working with it, it offers the opportunity to clear blockages and reach deeper understandings about the self.

where does catalyst come from?
it is a trigger or sensitivity that is activated in the mind (awareness) when the Total Self perceives an opportunity for greater clarity of itself. Catalyst is not the 'event' that happened; for eg, some people might think that having a car crash or losing one's job is inherently a catalyst ... that is more the event. The catalyst itself is the mind's attachment to what happened, the narrative or reactivity to what happened. Think of it like this: 150 people go to a movie theatre and see the same movie. 150 people walk out with 150 different opinions on what happened and what they experienced. The stimulus was the same (the movie you watched) but the reactions are from one end of the spectrum to the other. That is the 'catalyst'. The reaction that one had to the event.
the catalyst itself is self-prompted. Meaning that it is chosen by the self.
what does that mean? chosen by the self?
if we look at the Catalyst Cards above, we can see that the three cards in question sit at the third level in the chain of processing. The Matrix and the Potentiator levels are the first two rungs.
now, in the above cases, the 'Matrix' is that place that has an 'active, present' quality ... and the Potentiator is that place that has more the quality of being a 'reservoir' or place of 'fullness'. These two positions (the Matrix and the Potentiator) work together to generate what we know as 'catalyst'.
take for an example the nature of the Mind Cards. These are cards 1 and 2 (the Magician and the High Priestess). The Magician is that which is empty, like a Magician on the stage on his lonesome. The High Priestess is that infinite reservoir of the deep mind from which the Magician can pull a 'bunny out of the hat'. But in this case, it is not just a 'bunny' that the Magician can pull out from nowhere, but it is any infinite possibility that you can conceive of. Such is the 'fullness' and 'completeness' of what we know of as the High Priestess (a metaphor for the deep mind). But we also know that the Magician has one hat at a time (our consciousness being limited, and thinking of 'one thing' at a time, although at great speed sequentially - like a rushing space/time river). The Magician does not contain all things; it holds just the things that is needed.
This interaction between the Magician and the High Priestess generates what we know of as 'catalyst'; in this case, represented by the card sitting above, which is the Empress.

now what does the Wheel of Fortune represent?
the Wheel represents the catalyst of the body. It is/are those innumerable physical interactions we have with others in the space/time field; this includes physical contact, conversations, people we see on the bus, everything we do on our computers and the internet. It is the events of our life. But some of what happens to us in the physical space (the 'body) gets our attention more than other things. When this happens, it is like the spinning of the Wheel of Fortune (think of the tv gameshow), and it stopping and landing on a certain spot. Why that spot? what does that mean for the self?
what does the Empress represent?
the Empress is the catalyst of the mind; it is auto-generated, as described above, through the interaction of the Magician and the High Priestess. In this case, we are dealing purely with the 'mind'; it is the mind's reaction or response to itself.
the Empress represents a certain 'default' setting to how we approach the nature of catalyst. Think of a royal court, with certain protocols and arrangements of functions. The Empress is the way in which we greet newcomers, those that enter our house (and that which enters the house is nothing but ourselves, the self-chosen catalyst). We can be warm and friendly towards our guests, and try and work with them (seeing the catalyst as 'helpful). Or we can be combatative, and try to kick the interloper our of our consciousness (a form of avoidance or control). How we meet and greet our catalyst is the place of the Empress.
what is the Star of Hope?
the Star, high above in the skies, one of many stars, is the catalyst of the spirit. It is that which is not of the body (temporary, physical, transient); that which is not of the mind (that which ponders itself); but rather that which of the spirit, which is that thing which speaks to the Allness of the Creator. The Star (and by consequence all those things which are of the spirit) is of the 'Light'.
the two cards before the Star of Hope are the Devil (matrix of the spirit) and the Tower (potentiator of the spirit). The Devil represents a certain metaphysical darkness, a groping in the unknown world of infinity; and the Tower represents a lightning flash that strikes from eternity and briefly illuminates our world of finities. The interaction of these two cards generates a more lasting speck of Light (the 'star' in the night sky), that leads us forward on our journey towards infinity and allness.
The Star of Hope is the directionality in our lives, our life's purpose, the sort of narrative we tell ourselves when we get out of bed in the morning about what we are doing, and more importantly, why we are doing the things we are doing. It is where we are going on our journey, walking the infinite path of the Creator.

Of course, the catalyst cards then lead onto the Experience Cards, which lead to a result or an effectuation in the Significator Cards (the seating of learnings), which then offer the possibility of Transformation within the context of the Great Way. But you can see how the chain of processing continues past the point of the catalyst. But if the catalyst is not recognised and worked with, those subsequent processes cannot take place, as the 'flow' into those higher nodes is not present.
