RE: LIKES
i miss being able to not see them too
Edit: primarily miss this bc I'll often want to do a CTRL+F for a username, for a post, but now that the likes are displayed I'm getting about 50 results instead of 1 or 2.

I agree; the whole idea of "Likes" seems to create a delusion of competition and serves to create a need for acceptance and status.

I enjoy likes because it's easier than replying and I usually don't have anything to say anyways.

there's no way to disable it via the user profile, but if you are using Chrome, then this extension works wonders:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/stylebot/oiaejidbmkiecgbjeifoejpgmdaleoha?hl=en
just install it, click on the likes field, and choose to hide it.

I've also asked Steve if it's possible to revert back to the old system where it doesn't display likes automatically.

RE: LIKES
Would you all prefer to have names disappear and show the like quantity only?
The plugin is for an older forum version that we ran, and the author never updated the code. I got it to work partially, but could not figure out how enable the hide/show feature. So for now, we either show names or we remove them altogether and only display the quantity of liked received.

this is probably preferable, in my opinion.
It's like going to the ballot - and having a hidden vote.
I personally don't use the Like system for the reasons that Shawna cited, but it is a way of showing appreciation for someone's post.
That said - the line between appreciation and approval/disapproval is a fine one; and one has to be keenly aware of what the mind is doing when engaging in 'likes'.

RE: LIKES
I don't mind the likes because I see it as catalyst just like anything else, an interesting and benign one to learn from. If consensus is to make it anonymous I have no problem with that either, or if we remove it altogether that's fine too. I'm just not sure I'd post here as often as I do because, there have been times where I've made posts that have shocked me with the amount of likes they get, which is great positive feedback from otherselves as a mirror, and has helped to greatly improve my confidence in who I am and how I present myself as a whole. So thanks everyone!!!

RE: LIKES
I actually like the likes because it shows me who might be interested in the things I'm saying and is an easy way, as Karl said, to show I enjoyed or appreciated a person's post without necessarily needing to say something because I may not always have something to say. I think it's neutral in itself and sure someone could approach it competitively but I think it can also be approached as a way of communicating and showing interest.
I would actually do away with the whole count thing, as in the "Likes Given" and "Likes Received", but I would keep it that on individual posts it shows who liked it.

RE: LIKES
Could we go back to not having the option to expand them - like how it was for a few hrs on bug night? That way one could still find out who liked the post thx to the "Find All Threads/Posts Liked For" link.
Edit: Or maybe I prefer just having them there on display...Idk.

RE: LIKES
Steve, I've had a look at what code was available in the Html and the fix seems quite simple. In the plugin code dealing with the Div elements presenting the 'Like' information you need to add this:
Code:
<a href="#" onclick="thankyoulike.tgl(<POST ID VARIABLE>);return false;" </a>
Replace <POST ID VARIABLE> with the php variable which outputs the post ID in resulting html. You may need to restore the gif image.
You place this line directly after the following line and before tyl_title span ID. I've not looked at the plugin but I assume it 'injects' this code which you modify:
Code:
<!-- start: thankyoulike -->
<td class="trow2 post_buttons ">
---> Line Here
Update: Ignore the above code. I ended up breaking it somehow. I went ahead and checked the plugin files. It's possible the templating changed, but see if you still have this code:
Code:
'thankyoulike_expcollapse' => "<a href=\"#\" onclick=\"thankyoulike.tgl({\$post['pid']});return false;\" title=\"{\$tyl_showhide}\" id=\"tyl_a_expcol_{\$post['pid']}\"><img src=\"{\$theme['imgdir']}/{\$tyl_expcolimg}\" alt=\"{\$tyl_showhide}\" id=\"tyl_i_expcol_{\$post['pid']}\" /></a> ",
It is located on line 324 of thankyoulike.php.
Finally, it seems you need to add the missing JS code back into the head. You may need to check the plugin files for this:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.bring4th.org/forums/jscripts/thankyoulike.js?ver=130"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var tylEnabled = "1";
var tylCollapsible = "1";
var tylUser = "0";
-->
</script>

RE: LIKES
The transparency of likes being shown is a positive step for me like Parsons sais. I also like a post for the same reasons that Karl mentioned and also see it as an endorsement. I sometimes view the likes received and pay greater attention to the post in the hope that I can glean something from them. If it is distracting to any member though it may be worthwhile having a 'hide' function. Back to the principle of transparency, all the cards are on the table in the true green density. If only my fiancée could scan my mind sometimes!
Finally back to the endorsement factor it reminds me of that game show 'who wants to be a millionaire' where a contestant is unsure of the answer and calls on the 'ask the audience' option. The audience is not always correct when the poll is requested but it has helped many a seeker in the quest for self realisation!
Ok the analogy falls apart at the end but I think I have conveyed why I appreciate it.

RE: LIKES
I think likes are great. I agree with Unbound that perhaps not having the count would be okay. But who cares? If one has any "unhealthy" attachments to these things, then that is a lesson for them alone and not a concern of the forum. In general, I see nothing wrong with it. It helps to build more connections—the energy of resonating with something someone has written. I really wouldn't imagine this forum being in danger of a popularity contest. But if so, Plenum wins.
