Your choice of technique is a good one, Lulu. When you breath in the energy, it may be useful to circulate the breath from the back of the skull, up and then down the front, as I have found that to be the most vulnerable area. Also, you may want to add a second part to it which I have found useful which includes the full cycle of expelation. After one consumes, it also requires an elimination or release. So for myself a powerful technique I use is to with my in-breath pulling in white light in to my body, and then with the out breath releasing black smoke.
There are also mantras and such which could be powerful and useful, such as Shanti.
However, it is quite true that so long as we hold within us pain, there is pain to be amplified by others.
