I think the idea is that instead of asking for the "other" to be forgiven, I am asking for myself to be forgiven, as I and the "other" are actually one.
Another thought came as I read your post. I don't know how you feel about the Abraham material, but from that perspective, you might want to gradually fill your mind with other thoughts about things that make you happy.
It's not easy to stop thinking about an elephant if that's your focus, but if you're thinking about angels all the time, you don't have any space in your mind left to think about elephants.
