I'm reading Handbook to the Afterlife by Pamela Rae Heath and Jon Klimo

In it it says that sometimes a depressed spirit can hang around living people which causes them to feel depressed or even suicidal.

Many "ghosts" don't know they're dead.

The living can aid the dead by prayer, or otherwise helping them to see the spirits around them. The spirits such as guides might be invisible to spirits who are down. They may be stuck in a grey mist realm. Or the lower astral plane.

If someone has an addiction in life, then when they die chances are they will still have that addiction (psychological).
The dead spirit may hang around others who are drinking or doing drugs so they can feel the sensations.

But bringing other people down by a spirit can cost them a lot in karma.

It's not all just love on the other side. Spirits can feel grief and other emotions too. They carry their emotional baggage with them into the afterlife.

Well, a depressed spirit can hang around a given living person only if they are a vibrational match to that spirit.  So for a depressed spirit to influentially depress a human being, said human would have had to have been vibrating in a complementary vibrational range to begin with.  Then once the spirit was attuned to the person, (you might say "attached") they could have some influence on the human subject.

However, the human, with an act of will, and a little bit of mental effort, could attune themselves to a higher vibration and if the spirit wasn't willing or able to follow them into those higher vibrational ranges would be "shaken off".  This is also true of so called "possessions".  However, most people don't know this, and once in the grips and throes of suicidal depression and negative obsession, rarely take stock enough to put such actions into any sort of effect.

We have a short span of attention, and thus, those who are experiencing such negative vibrations are usually just experiencing the tale end of a long period of time of focusing negatively.  So normally, focusing on light for a brief period of time will not provide lasting relief.  It has to become a default activity once does as a normal act of perceiving.  And then it will simply be self perpetuating and no more conscious focusing will be required.

This book is amazing. It also talks about how to guide spirits into the Light who don't see their guides, or are otherwise unwilling to go. Some are indeed afraid of going into the Light because they think they might be going to hell.

In the case of abused children, it's good to visualize a kitten or a puppy that guides them into the Light.

I read quite a few afterlife books, and this one is unique in that I learned some new stuff that wasn't in other books.
