Funny, I was under the impression that NASA job has been to explore space, and the Government job has been to coordinate actions between private groups that cant coordinate their actions due to geographic differences or language barries.

EDIT: or is the crux of the argument here that you think it is the government / nasa's job to hide things from us.
If so then I feel doubly sad for the world "you/me" or "this aspect of the self" lives in. The fundemental job of government is to act as a mediator between groups, that is, to govern disputes, to arbiter. Not to lie or hide things from those they arbiter or govern. And / or NASA's job is to hide alien contacts, since when? Or is the real argument here that all higher ups are supposed to lie to us to keep us in the dark? If so then what kind of higher ups do you/we have? The bad type in my opinion.
Anyway. My opinion is that governments are meant to govern, not to lie, and NASA is meant to study space (internal and external) and not lie about it, pathologically to everyone at all times.
I think NASA is doing a job that grades somewhere between poor and disasterous and the US gov is doing a job somewhere between disasterous and mass extinction level event.
