Also consider pre-existing trauma that people 'carry' prior to entering into a potentially challenging job (e.g., anxiety disorders, PTSD etc). For example, in the mental health sector we have many who have been thru challenging psychological issues in their life experience and become sort of the 'wounded healers'... some are able to go thru healing prior or during their work as therapists but some do not. The ones who carry lots of unresolved issues are at higher risk for being vicariously traumatized or becoming highly involved with clients' challenges (in an unhealthy way).
