No offense intended, but it seems to me that is not so much about defiance in itself, but rather a feeling of lack of self worth? I can also see it as an expression of anger or frustration because of the pain of the differences, as some differences can be very "sharp" to experience.
I understand what you mean though, I have always held on to being a fighter, when really I have no desire to fight. I think it is a defense mechanism we weave in to our personality shells of sorts aha
