Compassion, and opening one's self to others at the heart level, makes it possible to be STO. STS requires a certain barrier to others in order to stay focused on self alone. It would take a lot of energy to keep all others at bay to maintain that focus, which may be why Ra claims STS individuals need to be more polarized to advance.
