I've just come across this Law of One quote (on a recent thread), so will post it here to add to my above explanations.

"The healing ability, like all other, what this instrument would call paranormal abilities, is effected by the opening of a pathway or shuttle into intelligent infinity. (......) The purpose of carefully and consciously opening this channel is to serve in a more dependable way, in a more commonplace or usual way, as seen by the distortion complex of the healer. To others there may appear to be miracles. To the one who has carefully opened the door to intelligent infinity this is ordinary; this is commonplace; this is as it should be. The life experience becomes somewhat transformed and the great work goes on."

"Usui Reiki" is "Intelligent Infinity"

Then why would one need to be initiated?

Why would one need to use one school's practice?

some people can channel Usui Reiki/Intelligent Infinity without initiation... (and for example... when doing the Japanese martial art 'Aikido' the energy you are using is 'Reiki'...)
- the difference is that with an initiation (which involves the crown chakra being opened and activated to permanently draw in 'Universal Life Force')... it means it comes through 24/7 for the rest of your life... automatically...

- so for example if I have my palm chakras resting on my abdomen while I'm sleeping... I'm automatically giving myself Reiki...

- as the above quote speaks about... "the carefully opening the door..." "the pathway..."
so - to be initiated by a reiki master is to have that door (crown chakra) carefully opened...

what do you mean about "one school's practice"?

anticipating your possible explanation... I can say that my path to becoming a conduit for Intelligent Infinity isn't the only one, the only "school" - the only 'way'... but as far as I know from decades of research and direct experience,- Usui Reiki - through the specific Reiki lineage I am from, is the only method I can personally vouch for as being 100% complete/successful (in initiatory terms)... and 100% 24/7 output -  
(this doesn't mean other ways aren't available, valid, powerful and/or just as complete.)

The main difference I've observed in over 20 years is that all other forms of energy are turn on/turn off.. whereas Reiki is permanently 'on' for the rest of your life...

another difference, is many forms of energy healing involve using one's own healing capacities/energies... which can drain the healer...

whereas with Reiki I get filled with it first.. then it goes through my hands...

channelling Reiki is very blissful for me as well as the recipient
