The lion on the third step and the sphinx on the fourth step reminds me of Ra and Q'uo's notion that fourth density is the refining of the rough-hewn sculpture of third density. That is, a sphinx could be thought of as a super lion, a further development of the self as attained in third density. I have deducted that since according to Q'uo the third density has a higher potential for change in consciousness, we can get closer and closer to our super-lion/sphinx state as achieved through spiritual development. Having an active approach to spirituality exponentially increased the results as we go further.
