When I was about 5 or 6 years old I was watching one of the chucky movies with my dad. Needless to say, there was a scene that scared the crap out of me. My dad could tell I was getting very disturbed and scared to death and then he laughed and said to me, "it's fake"...and then my fear instantly vanished.
"It's fake" became my mantra and I started applying it to nearly everything that scared me - not just horror movies. I'd hear really loud thunder and while my friends would scream in terror I'd just be laughing and thinking it's fake. I still use it to this day; when something unsettles me, I remind myself: everything's ultimately an illusion.
