Yeah, discipline is key, but in my experience it's more a discipline of "not giving up" than doing something particular or forcing anything. My best meditations are ones where I want to explore myself in meditation. When I don't want to do that for whatever reason, I meditate anyway, even if it's bad and unfocused, and trust that my practice is building my ability to hold attention.
