I tend to be suspicious of this type of information, but not because of alleged links to secret human conspiracies. I've delved into works concerning the negative types of contacts, and cannot dismiss the significance of such, which also exist and account for a significant portion (though the exact portion is not easy to be sure of). For example, the work of Karla Turner concerning abductions and mind-programming by "visitors", who hide the real nature of what has happened behind screen memories and installed mental blockages.
Some lump all "ET" contact in the category of an attempted invasion and/or re-engineering of humanity for negative purposes. Some go the other way and dismiss all such claims as based on unfounded fears, or confusions. Both positive and negative entities not of this world have interacted with humanity for many millennia, based on the various types of findings of alternative historians and paranormal researchers. I take the possibility of positive contact seriously, but I also take the topic of ongoing negative interventions seriously.
Various terms are used by various people. With the space age, the ET way of looking at things became the most common. Earlier in history, a variety of ideas of supernatural beings were used to describe basically the same things. It seems that such beings have been around for very long, but not in the same physical space, except for their "appearances" - and so, "ultraterrestrial" is another word used to describe them; related to this place, to Earth, but usually not "down to Earth" in a visible way. But with the coming of the transition into 4D for Earth, every 4D faction hoping that people on this planet will come to resonate with its ways and basic nature becomes "available", for good and ill, and more things of this kind happen.
