In the case of the novel by Giono, the Horseman on the Roof, this young exiled Italian soldier rides back towards Italy through the south of france, often a barren not habited place and at the beginning meets this doctor trying to save from cholera the life of a farmer and shows the soldier what to do. The doctor himself starts to show symptoms and Angelo, the soldier, tries to save him but to no avail. On his journey, in a town where he tries to escape the quarantine, jumping through roof tops, he will accidentally meet this young woman, with whom he will have a non sexual relationship, but whom he will save later from an episode of cholera. In the end after many adventures, sometimes horrific, while both are riding through desert landscapes, he will deliver her to her home and husband and from there he will ride, et the height of happiness towards Italy.
So it is about all those same things of the journey
It’s a long journey but the descriptions of landscapes, heat, sun and nights are beautiful.
