European Union

A decade before European Union was created, 'Europeans' were cutting each other's throats. Literally. Its the European Union that made them a connected polity and prevented such things.

Just like how earlier people's become 'countries' or 'nations' by combining every other ethnic group under one umbrella. Many of those ethnic groups spoke different languages, and some still do today.

And just like how those ethnic groups became ethnic groups by combining every other tribe under one umbrella. And so on.
