Your post Quincunx, made me think of this Buddhist story I heard once, 
It’s about the view that there would be hell and heaven. So a visitor is taken to what it would be supposed to be hell, and three persons are sitting across three others, they each have a bowl of rice but they have very long chopsticks and can’t feed themselves. Then the visitor is taken to what would be supposed to be heaven and he sees the same picture. So he asks why are these three in heaven then, and the answer is they feed the person across them.
