Just because people don't know how to interpret them doesn't mean there is no meaning behind them. The veiling and puzzling was done on purpose.
It seems to have been quite common around that time - check out "Cornelius Agrippa : De occulta philosophia" for example. Agrippa lived at approx. the same time as Nostradamus. His work was deliberately veiled since he dealt with delicate subjects like maaaagick
