When someone contemplates "owning" a parrot, somebody usually advises them that the bird may outlive them, so it's a long-term commitment. Not very often is a person literally advised that a dog or cat will likely die before the person does, although this usually is understood.
I advise a grieving spouse that marriages can be wonderfully good or horribly bad, so being miserable after a spouse's death is preferable to being happy. So be sad with the loss but remember all of the love and fun that you had, and send gratitude to the animal for being there with you.
