The leading Prussian thinkers had to ask themselves, how the hell could this have happened when their state was as modern, their army as well trained and equipped as Napoleon's?

    great post Questioner.

I've been giving myself an education into how the modern system of schooling came to be. As you describe so succinctly, it all goes back to the Prussians and their desire to form a clockwork army.

all this is documented with primary records. Also documented is the hand of industrialists and the power elite in funding and pushing the state schooling agenda.

if reading isn't your thing (and this stuff can be hard to slog through) there is an audio series here with John Taylor Gatto describing his decades of experiences within the NY public school system. He tried his best to rebel from within Smile

there is a lot of prologue, so jump to the 40 minute mark or so, or where-ever you hear John start talking. He has an unmistakable voice and delivery BigSmile

    enjoys
