There is also the program that seems to override free will or the mush brain. A blockage is karma. So applying the "mind over matter" in a sense does not overcome soul program. That's if we call mind the thinking process.
Free will is an odd thing to me.
I would say conscious awareness of his issue would have allowed direct intervention. I think he functioned on belief though.
