Thank you for posting on this Archetype, plenum, you are the first!
Also, abstrktion, I wonder if it would make more sense to post the second half of your analysis to this thread about the Great Ways. I suspect that by breaking up the text, you will be more likely to induce readers to read your writing.
For me, the most striking feature of this card is the presence of the child, who is pictured in no other card in the Egyptian deck. The child, the offspring, is the synthesis of the male and female energies, all three of which are rising out of the sarcophagus together.
Many call this Archetype "Awakening". I certainly prefer this name to "Judgment", which has a bit too much of a Christian Judgment Day influence for my taste. Yet, Judgment Day is precisely what is depicted here. When the harvest is accomplished, this holy trinity within will be called forth to ascend into a new experience.
But in a more mundane sense -- certainly more relevant to the movements of everyday life -- this card depicts the awakening of the child within. All of us are aware of the existence of this inner child, who is ever innocent, joyful and spontaneous, but so often the challenges along the path to awaken this inner child are not appreciated. If awakening the child were simple, then this card would depict the child rising out of the sarcophagus alone. No, this act requires a three-fold harmony among the members: The male self (the conscious self which chooses moment to moment) must hear the calling of spirit and align its will to the higher purpose heralded in this calling. The female self (the unconscious self which can either enliven and give power to the conscious self or emasculate and weaken the conscious self) must also hear the calling of spirit and embrace a constant state of faith in the purity and worthiness of the calling. When these two awaken to the calling in unison, the child-self is born whose responsibility is to trust in the will and faith of the male and female selves and maintain a lightness of spirit, an untaintable mirth which can at any moment be shot down by heavy feelings of unpleasant duty (in the male self) or fear (in the female self). The child must, so to speak, keep its head in the game (always playing!) in order to maintain its existence.
It is the birth of this inner child which transforms the material reality from lifeless mundanity into an infinite range of exciting possibility. The sarcophagus was so cold and imprisoning prior to the Awakening, yet the rising from this sarcophagus is an entirely spiritual event. It is still the physical illusion in which you live and move, yet it is no longer a prison, no longer a coffin where your spirit goes to die. It is only the child within that is excited by each turn around the bend. The male self alone sees only the ceaseless plodding of chores, while the female self alone sees only the myriad demons which constantly barrage her with injury and insult.
And who is it that calls? Who is the angel in the top right corner? For me, this is the Higher Self. For those of a religious bent, the calling comes from that which is perceived as divine. Hindus often feel that their favored god has called them, rather than they choosing it. Born again Christians often speak about the Lord calling them, observing that all of their religiosity prior to this calling was only lip-service. For me, the calling comes from an inner vision of the Creator. When one has tasted even the smallest drop of the divine nectar, nothing else yields the same satisfaction. No longer can I enjoy the endless cravings of the unbalanced body the same way, because I have seen a vision of beauty so compelling that I cannot forget it. It pulls me out of my cold, dark hell and into a world where there is no reason to be anything but childlike.
It is the calling which must needs precede the awakening. This is why you cannot awaken a sleeper by your own will. You do not know what will fall upon the ears of your sleeping friend as a call from the Lord. Only the sleeper can recognize the call. And when this call is heard, the male and female selves, even if only for a moment, release the clutter which kept them in chains, unite in the holy embrace, and beget the inner child who alone can populate the New Earth. It is this calling which the male self hears and discovers that he actually has a will to act. It is this calling which the female self hears and discovers that she is capable of overcoming her fears.
