I read an article about a hereditary prion disease called Fatal Familial Insomnia which makes it physically impossible for someone to sleep. The condition develops usually around middle-age and leads to worse and worse insomnia leading to hallucinations, dementia and eventually death. There is also a non-hereditary version called Spontaneous Fatal Insomnia which is caused by mutation.
Must be a terrible thing to experience, really shows how important sleep and dreams are.
