    Aesop Rock - Daylight

Yes, yes, y'all, and you don't stop
And keep on, 'til the break of dawn
Yes, yes, y'all, and you don't stop
And keep on, 'til the break of dawn

Put one up for Shackle Me Not, clean logic procreation
I did not invent the wheel, I was the crooked spoke adjacent
While the triple sixers' lassos keep angels roped in the basement
I walk the block with a halo on a stick, poking your patience
Y'all catch a thirty second flash visual
    Dirty cooperative med platoon
    Bloom, head-trip split ridiculous
Fathom the splicing of first generation f***-up
    With trickle-down anti-hero smack (Kraken!)
I pace my game for zero hour completion cretin, splash
Duke of early retirement picket dream
    American Nightmare hogging the screen
I'll hold the door open so you can stumble in
If you'd stop following me around the jungle gym
Now it's honor, and I spell it with the 'H' I stole from heritage
Merit crutched on the wretched refuse
    From my teeming resonance
I promise, tempest tossed breed with a bleeding conscience
    See, the creed accents responsive
But my spores divorced the wattage
And I'm sleeping now (Wow!) yeah, the settlers laugh
You won't be laughing when your covered wagons crash
You won't be laughing when the buzzards drag your brother's flags to rags
You won't be laughing when your front lawn is spangled with epitaphs (You won't be laughing!)
Then I'll hang my boots to rest when I'm impressed
So I triple knot 'em and forgot 'em
    His origami dream is beautiful
But man, those wings will never leave the ground
Without a feather and a lottery ticket, now settle down

All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way

Slacker-bound intimate tabloid headline with a pulse
Shimmy cross the centerfold, enter dead time engulfed
Divvy crumbs for the better souls
With seven deadly stains, adhere the blame to crystal conscience
The result's a lowlife countin' on one hand what he's accomplished
Okay, link me to activism chain activate street sweep
    Plug deteriorating cenobite pendragon
I hock spores coursed by the morbid
Spreading of mad men, Alley gospel
Sinking your Lincoln-Log cabin and Charlie Chaplin waddle
I could zig-zag and zig 'em again
For the badge dreams sparkle in my brick wall windows
Another thick installment of one night in Gotham
Without the wretched; Houston, we have a problem
Attached to the festive batch of city goblins
Who split holiday freaks on a box cut cinema high road bellow
Head gripped, watch red bricks turn yellow
Sort of similar to most backbones at camp Icarus
    Where all fiddler crabs congregate
    And get pampered for bickering
    Life's not a b****, life is a beautiful woman
You only call her a b**** 'cause she won't let you get that pussy
Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests
Or maybe you're just an a******
Who couldn't sweet talk the princess
Kiss the speaker wire Peter/pacifism pegging threshold
    Stomach full of halo kibbles
Wings span cast black upon vigils
Here to Duck Hunt ticker tape vision and pick apart the pixels
I got a friend of polar nature, and it's all peace
You and I seek similar stars but can't sit at the same feast
Metal Captain, this cat is askin' if I've seen his bit of lost passion
I told him: "Yeah," but only when I pedaled past him

All I ever wanted was to pick apart the day
Put the pieces back together my way

    Soul mission (Soul mission)
    Soul purpose
Mom knew I was worth it
Since the day that I was birthed and came out of her lurkin'
Lookin' at all of the nurses, she said I was special
Knew that s***, that was for certain
I would've thought this world was perfect, but it came with some curses
And read between the verses, if the truth you've been searchin'
I woke up, I'm alerted, I was feelin' like a servant
    I ain't a part of this circus
    My soul been overworkin'
She can't handle my burden, but she say she want a Birkin
I fell asleep in churches, I ain't know what he was chirpin'
Within myself I got faith, then prayers start unfoldin'
I know that God real, but not the way that they had told us

Bryson, Bryson, everybody loves Bryson, oh
Bryson, Bryson, everybody loves Bryson, oh

Ayy, swing like I'm Tyson (Like I'm Tyson), but I ain't doin' no fightin' (No fightin')
    And I've been feelin' righteous
    I'm going through enlightenment (Enlightenment)
    Conscious of a psychic
    In between her like hyphens
They sayin' I don't know s***, but wait 'til it hit the fan
    Groundin' up in the sand
The work put in, I seen dividends
I'm a bigger man, better man, I got a better plan
If you don't understand, where's somebody with some understandin'?
Pineal gland in my crown and I got the upper hand (Red light)
Put the blues in rubber bands, I attract abundance
Affirmations daily, that's why blessings keep on comin' in
3-6-9, when I wake I write it three times
Six times in the daytime, nine at nighttime
Put positive thoughts into your heart, it'll change your DNA
Negative thoughts, they fall apart, now a nigga thinkin' straight
I don't even smoke weed no more, I put that on the Heaven's gates (Uh-uh-uh, uh-uh-uh)
Speakin' on the Heaven's gates, I know I'm going to Heaven, man

Ayy, I never thought I'd say this
But I'm eating on the vegan plate (Eating on the vegan plate)
Don't take me to Chick-fil-A, I'm eatin' at the Grand Cafe (Eatin' at the Grand Cafe)
They ain't open on Sunday anyway
f*** your dinner date (f*** your dinner date), you are what you eat
I'm countin' green, eatin' celery (Woah-woah-woah)
I don't care what nobody else think or say, self love the best love
Self-hate got you out of shape
    Distractions all in your face
They tell me when they gonna wait
    Donald Trump the last president
    Ain't no more candidates
    Turned my backyard to farmland
But grew up watching Gangland (Gangland)
On the block, hangin', I had my Drac' singin' (Singin')
All the negative you put in you get it back, that's dangerous
Felt like all my karma came back when I got famous
Put the good in, you get the good out
I don't even tote my gun no more, 'cause I'm knowin' that I'm good now
    Universe keep working for me
Ain't nobody goin' to touch me
They say "Protect Chop at all costs"
They need to change the subject

DMX was one of my biggest influences as a young adult.
I was alone in life and his music pulled me through a lot.

    RIP DMX

    Dec 18 1970 - April 9 2021

    The Prayer

I come to you hungry and tired, you give me food and let me sleep
I come to you weak, you give me strength and that's deep
You call me a sheep and lead me to green pastures
Only asking that I keep the focus in between the chapters
You give me the word and only ask that I interpret
And give me the eyes that I may recognize the serpent
You know I ain't perfect, but you'd like me to try
Unlike the devil who just wants me to lie, 'til I die
Lord, why is it that I go through so much pain?
All I saw was black, all I felt was rain
I come to you because it's you who knows
You showed me that everything was black because my eyes were closed
You gave me the light and let me bask in your glory
So it was only right that when you ask for this story
I put it together to do our dogs some good
Our dogs being brothers and sisters in the hood
Plenty of times you sent help my way, but I hid
And I remember once you held me close, but I slid
There was something that I just had to see
That you wanted me to see so I can be what you wanted me to be
And I think I've seen it, 'cause I don't feel the same
Matter of fact, I know I've seen it, I can feel the change
And it's strange, almost got me beating down your door
But I have never known a love like this before
It's a wonderful feeling to get away from the pain
And up under the ceiling I get away from the rain
And the strain that I feel when I'm here is gone
I know real so I wipe away the tears; it's on
And I almost lost faith when you took my man
Monty, Paso, and Jay's brother Dan
And I fear that what I'm saying won't be heard until I'm gone
But it's all good, 'cause I really didn't expect to live long
So if it takes for me to suffer, for my brother to see the light
Give me pain 'til I die, but please, Lord, treat him right

    The Convo

    [DMX and DMX as God:]
You tell me that there's love here, but to me it's blatant
That with all the blood here, I'm dealin' with Satan
Plus with all the hatin', it's hard to keep peace (uh huh)
Thou shall not steal, but I will to eat
I tried doin' good, but good's not too good for me
Misunderstood, why you chose the hood for me?
Me? I'm aight; I just had to work hard at it
Went to grandma for the answer and she told me that God had it
So now here I am, confused and full of questions
Am I born to lose or is this just a lesson?
And who is gon' choose when it gets turned around?
And will it be laying in my own blood and on the ground?
My child, I've watched you grow up and I've been there

Even at those times you least suspected it, I was there

And look at what I've given you – a talent to rhyme

I may not come when you call, but I'm always on time

    Somebody's knockin'
    Should I let 'em in?
    Lord, we're just startin'
    But where will it end
    Somebody's knockin'
    Should I let 'em in
    Lord, we're just startin'
    But where will it end?

    [DMX and DMX as God:]
But when the funds are low, the guns'll blow
Lookin' for that one that owe, make 'em run that dough
No! Put down the guns and write a new rhyme

You'll get it all in due time, you'll do fine, just have faith 'cause you mine

And when you shine, it's gon' be a sight to behold

So don't fight to be old or lose sight when it's cold

See that light down the road? It's gon' to guide you there

Two sets of footprints; I was right beside you there
But what about them times I only saw one?
Those were the times when I was under the gun — It was then I carried you my son

Led you to safety, it just wasn't your time to face me (uh huh)
Ayo, a few of them times I thought you would erase me
When all you did was embrace me, prepared me for the worst
Offered me eternal life and scared me with the hearse
And the curse turned to grace when the hurt turned to faith
No more runnin' or slidin' in the dirt, 'cause I'm safe

    Somebody's knockin'
    Should I let 'em in?
    Lord we're just startin'
    But where will it end?
    Somebody's knockin'
    Should I let 'em in?

So if I'm your man, I'm in your hands, what's your plan?
Never had a friend 'cause you couldn't trust your man
Learned to stand before I crawled, things were twisted
And if you showed me anything at all, then I missed it
Looked the wrong way, I've done some wrong things
Kept a bad attitude, but that's what wrong brings
And now you mean to tell me that after all this time
It was you that kept the dog from goin' out of my mind?
It was you that breathed life into my lungs when I was born?
And it was you that let me know what was right from what was wrong?
And it was you that let me do, what I knew what could be done?
And it was you that gave me a good wife and a beautiful son?
And it's been you speakin' to me inside my mind?
And it's been you who has forgiven time after time?
It was you who opened my eyes so I could see?
And it was you that shined your light on me?
