In response to you though: why protect the ego? The mental body can inform the emotional body, and the emotional body can inform the physical body. From there you come to a point where the ego rests securely knowing that every other self delights in the unfiltered expression of the creator. Until it's a crime to be socially awkward, my path will be remain the same. Social norms are a creation of the fears of an individual society, and are useful to know as you search for healthier and healthier people to spend your time with.
