I've just started reading 'Buddha's Brain' by Dr Rick Hanson.

I found the following quite a profound passage:

    correct diagnosis indeed!

and sometimes its hard to see ourselves and our distortions for what they are ... that is when close friends and family (and even perhaps a stranger) can offer a mirror which can aid in seeing the self ('diagnosing' one's issues).

once the problem is laid bare, the solution can come much easier.

If you don't know what question to ask, why would you expect a satisfactory answer?

There is a high likelihood that the problems we experience now (the one we think is the problem) could possibly be the symptom or consequence of a deeper problem/issue. When diagnostician of any discipline stick with most accessible and frequently experienced symptoms, then try to treat that, the problems most likely will occur again. So what zenmaster said is very relevant.
